As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

Prompt Response: A time when I learned something unexpected about a family member was when my parents told me the stories about the early stages of their relationships. They were both very much the hippie type when they started dating, and their relationship was tumultuous at times.  At one point, my dad almost moved away by himself to live in a remote community isolated from civilization. The stories I've heard at one point just seem like a world away from my mom and dad. These stories changed the way I saw them because they are such a far cry from their lives now and it reminded me that they had a vibrant and exciting life before I was born.

Summary: Today in class we continued reading The Color Purple and answering questions on Writable.

Reflection: I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

Prompt Response:  A time when something has been both positive and a challenge was when I took AP Calculus. I felt proud being one of a few juniors in a senior class and I found a lot of satisfaction in the content. However, I also felt a lot of pressure to prove myself. I was simultaneously excited to be in the class and fearful that my teacher would think I didn't deserve to be. This shows how an experience can be both exciting and nerve wracking depending on how you look at the situation. Summary: Today in class we read the poems "The Lamb" and "The Tyger" and started working on our one pagers. Reflection:  I got better poetry analysis skills and practice putting information into a one page format.

Write about a time when you did something out of the norm. What was it and how did others react?

Prompt Response:  Something I've done that was out of the norm was attending the Globe Academy from kindergarten to 8th grade. At Globe, I was in the immersion program and learned Spanish, as well as learning math and science in the language. When I got to high school, I would say that I felt embarrassed to have gone to a charter school instead of a public school like everyone else. I think others judged me for being nerdy and privileged. I was the one of only a few freshman in the AP Spanish test, and I had already gotten a 5 on the exam, so my experience at Globe definitely put me ahead of my peers. Summary: Today in class we took notes on a poem by Emily Dickinson and analyzed it. Reflection:  I practiced note-taking skills, poetry analysis, and discussions. Who are you?: I am a curious and creative introvert.

Describe a time you couldn’t stop laughing.

Prompt Response:  A time when I couldn't stop laughing was when me and my boyfriend were on the way back from our trip to the beach and we were watching a movie in the car. In the movie, the main character was struggling to swim in the ocean and I don't know why I did it but I accidentally spit on myself. I was already very tired, and watching her swimming made me think I was swimming myself, and so I spit out the imaginary ocean water. My boyfriend thought it was the funniest thing in the world and couldn't stop laughing for about 10 minutes. I couldn't help but laugh as well, even though it was pretty embarrassing. Summary: Today in class we completed and submitted our One Pagers on a poem comparison. Reflection:  I got better skills putting my ideas into a format with visuals that can fit on a single page.
